On Thursday, Rostov-Don won The Women’s Russian Cup, beating CSKA.

The Women’s Russian Cup final coincided with the 4th anniversary of the Russian national team’s victory at the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. The head of the Handball Federation of Russia (the HFR) Sergey Shishkarev told TASS about this.

On the 20th of August, the Rostov-Don handball club won The Women's Russian Cup, defeating CSKA with a 29:26 score. This day four years ago, the Russian national team won the Olympic Games.

“Everyone wondered why the HFR chose such dates for the FINAL4. It was not entirely clear why the title was decided to be played in the middle of the week. I will disclose a little secret: we deliberately thought about this date that have been forgotten by many people, I guess. We wanted to remember those emotions and that great victory”.

“The match kept us on the edge of our seat, the intrigue was like at the Olympics: “Rostov-Don” could pass from “-4 ″ in the first half to “+4 ″ in the end of the match. Great! I really liked the way events developed on the ground. My congratulations to everyone on such a final”, - added the HFR head.

The best player of the match was the right back of the Rostov team, the Olympic champion Anna Vyakhireva. “Without the great and the unique player Anna Vyakhireva, the game would have been absolutely equal. And nobody knows who would have won”, - he said.

“Rostov-Don” became the winner of the Russian Cup for the tenth time in the history and for the sixth in a row. “Astrakhanochka” beat Krasnodar “Kuban” with a 22:19 score in the third-place match.
